Hamas Leader Muhammad Sinwar Reportedly Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Gaza Tunnel

GAZA CITY – Muhammad Sinwar, the de facto leader of Hamas in Gaza and younger brother of former Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar, was reportedly killed last week in a series of Israeli airstrikes targeting an underground command compound in Khan Younis. Israeli and regional media reported Sunday that Sinwar’s body, along with the remains of at least ten aides, was discovered in a tunnel beneath the European Hospital, an area that was heavily bombarded by Israeli forces.

The airstrikes, which took place on Tuesday, were aimed at a subterranean Hamas command center believed to be sheltering senior leaders. According to the Hamas-run health ministry, 16 people were killed and over 70 wounded in the initial strike. Subsequent bombing runs were carried out in the area, reportedly to prevent access to the tunnel complex.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Sunday that, while there is no official confirmation, “all indications” point to Muhammad Sinwar’s death in the strike. “According to all the indications, Muhammad Sinwar was eliminated,” Katz stated, though Israeli officials have said they are awaiting further intelligence or an official announcement from Hamas.

The reported death of Muhammad Sinwar marks a significant blow to Hamas’s leadership, coming months after his brother Yahya Sinwar-regarded as the mastermind of the October 7, 2023, attacks-was killed by Israeli forces in southern Gaza. Another brother, Zakaria Sinwar, was also reportedly killed in a separate Israeli airstrike on Saturday night.

In the same strike that killed Muhammad Sinwar, reports suggest that Mohammad Shabana, commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade, was also killed, further weakening the group’s senior command structure.

As of Sunday, Israel had not officially confirmed the deaths of either Muhammad Sinwar or Shabana, but the mounting evidence and statements from Israeli officials indicate a high degree of confidence in the outcome. The loss of the Sinwar brothers is widely seen as a major setback for Hamas, which has faced sustained Israeli military pressure and leadership losses since the start of the current conflict
